Each year, the Mitchell Yancey Substance Abuse Task Force sponsors a “Drug Take Back” day to collect unused/expired prescription medications for safe disposal. This year the Drug Take Back Day was held on Saturday, September 23rd and it was a great success! Between the drugs collected at the “take back” event (71 pounds)  and those collected at the 4 permanent drug drop boxes in Mitchell and Yancey counties (211 pounds), a total of 282 pounds were collected and safely disposed of during the 2016-17 fiscal year. Due to these efforts, these drugs won’t end up in the hands of children and youth, won’t be diverted and sold on the streets, and won’t tempt people to use them improperly.

Thank you to all who volunteered their time at the Take Back Day, who helped spread the word, and who brought in prescriptions! And a BIG thank you to The Prescription Pad of Burnsville, Yancey Sheriff’s Department, and Burnsville Police Department for helping to make this event a reality. We are also thankful for Project Lazarus who provided funding for promotional materials for this event.
