After a presentation on college access from former College Adviser, Lila Sheon, the Community Ambassador Real Equality (CARE) Team felt fired up about getting information on going to college out into the wider community. Many ambassadors reflected on their own experiences getting to college and do not want other Hispanic/Latino families in our area to feel as lost as they did in the process.
To address this, the CARE Team organized and hosted a family night in Spanish for families in the community to learn more about getting their students to college. Dr. Eric Klein, Associate Director for Pre-College Outreach and Success at UNC Asheville and Dr. Christina Viera, native Spanish speaker and Director of Diversity Education at UNC Asheville presented the information while the CARE Team and community members asked excellent questions. The evening was very well attended and several people commented on how useful this information was to give them a voice in helping their children. Thank you to the CARE Team, the Yancey County Library, Superintendent Kathy Amos, Dr. Klein, and Dr. Viera for such a successful evening!
The CARE team plans to host more College Access nights in the Fall and will help families stay updated on the college process through the CARE Team Facebook group.
