Cougar Fit Club enrollment is full this spring semester as it supports 15 engaged and active members! This semester we have had several guest instructors including Chip Conrad who is opening a gym in Micaville, Bodytribe Appalachia. Chip proposed a different view of what fitness means and led each student in exercises they could do to meet their goals. Morgan Flanagan led the group in a REFIT cardio dance class, this challenged student’s stamina and coordination but also proved all movement is good for your body!

Jordan English from Yancey County 4H facilitated a series of discussions and activities about substance use, stress and healthy decision making. These lessons were well received by students and the information seemed to resonate with each individual. Most recently we joined Tara Wright and her Appalachian Youth to Youth students for a lesson on coping strategies at Ray Cort Park. Middle and High school students worked together in small groups discussing which coping strategies could work best for them in times of stress. Cougar Fit students led some stretching and bodyweight exercises followed by some independent time to enjoy being outside!

Students remain engaged as we wind down the semester. The fun continues with Glen Ellington joining us this month to teach some juggling tricks! We also will be joining Tal Galton from Snakeroot Eco tours for a spring, hopefully much warmer hike at Bolens Creek. Attendance remains high with the anticipated reward of fitness gear students chose in the fall. Students with an eighty percent attendance rate or higher will get the end of the year reward of their choice; smart watch, adjustable hand weights, or a personal blender!
