This week is National Drugs & Alcohol Facts Week and Appalachian Youth to Youth wants you to learn the facts. Did you know that tobacco companies spend 9.5 BILLION dollars a year advertising products like cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco and vapes? That is 1 million dollars every hour. The state of North Carolina received $455.7 million in revenue from the Tobacco Settlement payments in 2020 yet of this, only $2.2 million went towards tobacco prevention across the state – the amount of money spent by tobacco companies in 2 hours. Big Tobacco knows it must spend more money than what is put into preventing tobacco use in order to influence what people believe.
What are ways youth and adults in Mitchell and Yancey Counties can help spread the facts about tobacco use so that Big Tobacco messages do not win people over?
Talk about the facts on tobacco use with my friends. Saying things like no tobacco use is safe and that the tobacco companies want people to be addicted so they can make more money.
